Paprika from La Vera market report

The agricultural organizations UPA-UCE and Asaja Extremadura show the complicated situation that paprika from La Vera sector is experiencing due to the freezing of prices during the last ten years, preventing covering, at least, the production costs and the lack of work forcing to use foreign worker.
The average price offered to paprika farmers is three euros. In 2017 the price was € 3.24 and already, in 1989 they paid 530 pesetas, that is, € 3.18. For this year farmers demand a minimum price of € 3.57 to almost cover production costs.
Therefore, a concentration of farmers at the headquarters of Denominación de Origen (Mérida) took place on April 17 to put an end to this situation. If the demands are not reached before May 13, the sector announces the 50 percent reduction of the planned planting for the coming years.
